Gym Based Intervention

More Than Physical Activity

SCI uses structured physical activity as a practical tool for engagement, relationship-building and positive change.

Delivered in a gym environment, sessions provide young people with a different way to connect, develop confidence and experience achievement, while working towards wider social, emotional and behavioural outcomes.

Self-Regulation

Physical activity can provide opportunities to recognise emotions, manage responses and develop positive coping strategies.

For some young people, traditional environments and conversation-led support can be difficult to engage with.

Physical activity provides another way in, creating opportunities to build trust, experience success and develop skills through doing rather than simply talking.

WHY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY?

Confidence

Achievable and visible progress can help young people develop greater belief in their abilities.

Resilience

Challenge and perseverance provide practical opportunities to develop resilience and respond positively to setbacks.

Engagement

A practical, active environment can help engage young people who have struggled to connect with more traditional forms of support.

Every intervetion is shaped around the individual young person, their needs and the outcomes agreed with the referring professional.

Sessions combine physical activity with relationship-based support, providing opportunities to work towards personal goals in a safe and consistent environment.

Led by an Experienced Practitioner

SCI's gym-based interventions are delivered by Merrick Osborne, Director and Lead Practitioner.

With over 15 years' experience supporting children and young people with complex social, emotional and behavioural needs, Merrick combines his experience in youth intervention with his professional fitness background to create sessions that are purposeful, engaging and individually tailored.

The relationship remains central throughout; physical activity provides the environment that enables challenge, achievement and positive change to develop.

SAFE. STRUCTURED. INDIVIDUAL.

SAFE

Sessions are delivered within SCI's safeguarding framework, with appropriate risk assessment and consideration of each young person's individual needs.

STRUCTURED

Clear expectations, boundaries and session routines provide consistency while allowing the intervention to respond to the young person.

INDIVIDUAL

Activity is selected according to ability, confidence, needs and agreed outcomes; not simply physical performance.

BEYOND THE GYM

The aim isn't simply to improve physical fitness.

The skills and experience developed through gym-based intervention - perseverance, confidence, self-regulation, positive decision-making and responding to challenge - are intended to support young people beyond the session and in their everyday lives.
